Pro-Tec Shovelhead 2 Helmet Product: A full face helmet geared toward the gravity rider. Cool graphics and great fit blend with the safety of an EPS liner for the safety one needs while rallying at breakneck speeds on the bike. MSRP: About $120 Colors: Mullet or Matte Black Pitch: The SH2 is back for 2011 with the addition of another colorway. Both models still have custom-molded low-profile ABS shells with an EPS liner for increased head protection while keeping the weight down. Strategically placed ventilation holes and channels keep airflow a priority. A removable Nylex interior helps keep the sweat to a minimum and makes cleaning a snap. Tech: CPSC/CE 1078/ASTM 1952 CERTIFIED Plus: Comfort. The last thing I want to think about when I am riding the DH rig is how well my gear fits. I ride with maximum armor because I am fairly new to the gravity scene and not 100% confident and I like that the Pro-Tec Shovelhead 2 was comfortable out of the box and has stayed that way through a summer of riding. The fit is snug without smooshing my skull. The helmet allows for some ventilation and maximum peripheral vision. The Matte Black version I tested is a great looking helmet and the subtle graphics give it bonus style points. Minus: The ear pads came unsnapped from the shell when I was messing with the chin straps and trying to get my fit just right on the chairlift. The pieces stay in place, but the sanp-system is something I bet could be improved upon. the chin straps could be 3 inches longer to allow me to slip the helmet up by loosening the straps without undoing them altogether. Gut Feeling: When it is time to put on a full face helmet you know things are getting serious. I’ve tried on a lot of these helmets to find the right fit, but the best I found for my melon was straight out of the box with the Shovelhead 2. Again, a helmet that fits right you don’t have to think about. Thinking about anything other than your line when the trail drops out from underneath you could spell disaster.
