John Chorlton
 Editor |
JOB John (Cakes) manages content, design, and usability. He is the reason for the seasons. -cakes@crankcollective.com- LIFE John is a New England transplant living in Crested Butte, CO with his wife and two baby boys. He earned a degree in English with an Art minor from Western State College in Gunnison, CO. He has worked in editorial positions for TransWorld Snowboarding and Snowboarder Magazine as well as contributing as a freelance writer for Bike Magazine, Backcountry Magazine, ESPN the Magazine, and many others. He currently coaches snowboarding at the Crested Butte Academy and continues to write and work for ESPN's X Games. MOUNTAIN BIKING John has been riding mountain bikes since the mid eighties, but has loved bikes since the day his babysitter cut him loose from training wheels. He is an avid cross-country rider with a healthy obsession for singletrack. Riding trails in the Gunnison Valley is his favorite, but he loves singletrack wherever he can find it, from the forests of New England to the coastal rides in CA, WA, and OR. He likes long, brutal climbs, serpentine singletrack, white-knuckle downhills where he is grinding his grundle on the back wheel, and, really, any time in (or near) the saddle. |
Phil Stern
 Founder / Manager |
JOB Phil is the go to guy for advertising, partnerships, events planning, and guitar lessons. -phil@crankcollective.com- LIFE Phil is a Jersey boy who grew up riding BMX bikes all over the block. He eventually transferred and finished out his high school career in CT. Phil attended Bowdon College up in Maine were he studied music and played lacrosse, and has been in Crested Butte skiing and riding bikes since 2005. Besides Crank Collective, Phil works at Crested Butte Academy and is also doing his darndest to finish off his master's at George Washington University. In other words, Phil works 25 hours a day. MOUNTAIN BIKING Phil got into riding from the summers he spent haying (saying hello to people) north of Steamboat, in Clark, CO. Then, when taking a semester off of school during college, one of Phil's buddies, Brian Matthews, really got him stoked on the sport. Phil's first real ride was Meadow Mountain in Vail, and after that ride Phil was ga ga over mountain biking. Soon after, Phil explored some trails in Maine, NH, and Mass while finishing off college and eventually made his way out to CB where all he did was ride a bike. Phil prides himself on his cross country riding and loves a good technical climb and a fun downhills. As for geography, Phil is open to all kinds of riding but is especially tickled by desert riding, slickrock, the mountainous stuff of Crested Butte, and a good forest ride back east. |

He has a diverse working history: resident assistant, director of a tutoring program at the university level, assistant camp director of an extreme sports camp in California, and secondary mathematics teacher. Besides mountain biking, John enjoys skateboarding, hunting, and trying to pay his parents back all the money he owes them. MOUNTAIN BIKING John has really gotten into mountain biking due to his recent move from Phoenix, AZ to Crested Butte, CO. He is horrible at climbing but still enjoys every aspect of a ride.
