Trainer vs. Roller

Had an awesome weekend riding at Hartmans!!  However, the forecast for the upcoming week gives me the feeling not many riding days are left until the harsh grip of winter takes hold.  Not ready to surrender my saddle time, I am considering upgrading my piece of crap trainer or maybe trying a roller.  Any thoughts on trainer vs. roller?

I've never used either, but would like to know what others use as well. Always thought it would be hard to pedal and not go anywhere. That said, it would be cool to not suffer so much building up the calluses on my taint every season!

I'd say very hard to ride and go nowhere. Perhaps the ticket is to not follow the TDF at all during July, and remain isolated so you never hear the results. Record it all and watch each stage start to finish during the winter while on the trainer. That could make you stoked!!!

Maybe we should set up some "rides" where we get together in someones garage and ride for a period of time - it would be like going on a road ride, with no traffic, and not actually going anywhere. But with good company. Gets some tunes going and do a "spin class" without an instructor. Now all I need is a roller or trainer thingamajiggy...
