I finally got out for a ride... I am out of shape but it was so good to get back up on my freshly tuned bike.  I decided to track my ride with the My Tracks App (Free) on my Samsung Vibrant android phone. I turned on the app, got a gps signal, started recording, and then just threw it in my bag. I was skeptical about it holding on to its satellite signal but I emailed the gpx file to myself and uploaded it.... look good! I brought my Garmin Edge 305 as well but haven't compared the files.  Gotta love technology. I suppose a big advantage to the Edge is that it is mounted on my handle bars and has physical (non-touch-screen) buttons and a display that is always on.  But nice to know I can use my phone as a legit substitute.... anyone else using these apps?   Link to my ride : White Tanks Competitive Loop, AZ

I've been using the iMapMyRIDE app on the iPhone. It is accurate, but does not include the altitude data when I export the .gpx files. We can figure out the altitudes here on Crank Collective using the Google Earth API, but it is a short coming that the app does not provide it. Also, the GPS function on my phone sucks the battery life, especially when I get out into the country that demands constant search for the signal because of terrain. It is amazing having all this tech in a phone, though.
